In December, we celebrated with you all the first-ever birth of a Three-banded armadillo in Mesker’s history. Mother, Pallina, and her “pup” are currently cherishing some peaceful bonding moments in their den. The “pup” has been steadily gaining weight each week, and we have determined that it is a male, though a name has yet to be chosen. We are thrilled to have successfully welcomed a three-banded armadillo into our family.
Three-banded armadillos are classified as near threatened, with their populations facing rapid decline. They inhabit regions in eastern Bolivia, southwestern Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina. This species is especially remarkable for its ability to curl up into a ball for protection.
You can visit the three-banded armadillos in the Nocturnal exhibit located in the Kley Building. Below is Day 22 vs. now!
